The Damned Movie Review

My partner and I love watching horror and psych thriller movies, and we already have a list of the ones we're going to see this year. We saw Nosferatu on Christmas, and more recently we went to see The Damned, which is what I'm going to talk about today.
The Damned is a period piece set in an Icelandic fishing village. It has the perfect bleak Scandinavian setting and even incorporates the folklore from that area.
What I look for in a good horror or psych thriller film is whether or not they use jump scares effectively, and I would say that this movie does. Based on the trailer, I thought it might be a bit cheesy with the scares because they showed a lot of the supposed ghost/monster. The scares were excellent, though, and they didn't rely on the music to make them happen. In fact, there was very little music at all, and only in the tense moments, which made the jumps even better.
I think two things could have added extra layers to the film. It would have been cool to have it in the native language. I do understand that it could have been confusing with the men in the other boat speaking their native language, but it also could have been interesting. I also think they could have done a bit more with the draugr before leaning into their ending.
Overall, the film was great, and we had very few complaints about it, except for trying to decide how we would have ended the film, lol. If you love a good psych thriller and some good old Scandinavian bleakness, I would highly recommend seeing it.
